Quite some time ago, one of my favorite followers asked what was my definition of effortless chic. It's always been on the back of my mind to dedicate a post in reply to her and I think this outfit might just answer the question. To be honest, effortless chic to me is really just a sugar-coated denomination of lazy days x androgynous. That said, my version never leaves the timeless staples: a classic graphic t-shirt, fitted black skinnies, simply-structured coat, feminine heels and a mandatory incorporation of leather. Here, I'm wearing a few items from my stash I had brought back from Europe and this Parisian t-shirt has to be my favorite purchase. Still in the process of sorting and editing the thousands of pictures I took on my excursion so photo diary still to come! In the meantime, how are you liking my new banner?

First off, I must apologize for neglecting my blog for the past few weeks. Don't be mistaken, I haven't disowned fashforward and I will hopefully be back on track once I return from my vacation. Second, I'm (was) in PARIS!! First stop was Barcelona, then Paris and now currently in London for a few more days. I will do a proper photo diary post once I have all my photos uploaded, which may take a while since I brought 3 cameras with me :) In the meantime, hope these pictures will suffice.

I'm seeing a lot of mixed prints for this coming fall and I'm loving the idea of mixing animal patterns. When I came across I Spy DIY and Style Scrapbook's DIY versions of the American Apparel over-sized clutch, I was inspired to personalize my own too. And now its my default bag for this summer :) Orange wasn't the first colour that came to my mind but it worked surprisingly well with the snake skin's neutral tones. I will be posting a tutorial later this week, stay tuned!

I came across this Missoni-esque fabric and knew that it'll be perfect for my DIY kimono as I was trying to escape from the typical oriental pattern that kimonos are usually in and not to mention that the bright hues were just right for this summer. I finished with a turquoise piping and the two large side pockets were definitely a necessity.

I don't remember when it started when birthdays are no longer something I look forward to, in fact each year seems harder to get by as I am faced with the reality in turning a year older. That's why my birthday cakes have not revealed my actual age for the past three years. Growing up, birthdays function more and more like an annual review for self-reflections rather than a celebration. I find that the more I learn, the less I know. Though some questions that puzzled me ten years ago still puzzles me now, I am excited to find out what the future holds for me. This week, I turned 27. Eeeks.

sheer genius

1. materials: approximately 2 meters of chiffon or crepe fabric and 19 mm elastic.
2. Fold the fabric in half and sew the sides together.
3. Turn the fabric inside out and fold the top of the fabric 5 inches outwards. Pin accordingly.
4. Sew all around with a 1 inch hem on the fold.
5. Measure approximately 19 mm below the top stitching then sew all around; but, leaving a 2 inch opening for the insert of the elastic.
6. Insert the elastic in the opening and pull it all the way through until it comes out on the other end (tip: use a safety pin for assistance).
7. Scrunch the fabric evenly by tightening the elastic to create your desired waistband.
8. Cut off any excess elastic. Overlap the ends of the elastic and sew them together.
9. Close and sew the 2 inch opening that was used to insert the elastic.
10. Sew a 6 mm hem for the bottom of the skirt.

And voila! This is how I DIYed my own sheer maxi skirt. Just pair it with a black bodycon dress or skirt! I will do another post later on how I made my own tassel belt so stay tuned :)

The weather lately has finally warmed up to feel like summer and appropriate enough to wear my sheer DIY maxi skirt. The royal blue hue is perfect for achieving that silhouette effect without exposing too much. This DIY is a lot easier to do than my midi project so I will post a tutorial on it soon! Julys are always busy but especially this year with too much happening at the same time and almost to the point that overwhelming is just an understatement.

Before I go on a DIY frenzy, here's my take on colour-blocking. It's an easy trend to pull off and put together and it's almost impossible to fail. Visit here for more colour-blocking inspirations :) Thank you everyone for their lovely comments on my previous post, it's all so encouraging!! Make sure to send me a picture of your own DIY shorts if you do happen to give it a try! I managed to get these pumps on sale and I rarely describe footwear as "hot" but these are and very much so; unfortunately, they are also the most awkward and difficult pair of shoes to walk in. But like everything else in life, nothing is perfect. bleh.

The DIY shorts I wore in my previous post is as easy as 1, 2, 3. In fact, just follow the steps below and you're set with your own pair of denim-crochet shorts this summer! Okay, so the idea of denim x crochet may not be an entirely new concept but I have yet to see this combo around and personally, I think they're quite a match :)

1. Materials: pair of shorts and crochet trimming (I used approximately 1 meter)
2. Turn the shorts inside out and pin the trimming to the hem of the shorts.
3. Sew them together.

I'm currently in a DIY/sewing obsession. Already have a few more DIY tutorial posts lined up for the next few weeks. I wish I had the time to execute all my ideas at once so I can share with you all! It's always inspiring to see what kind of DIYs other bloggers come up with. My 3 go-to blogs would have to be P.S.-I made this, A Pair and a Spare, and I spy DIY. They're all so talented and never fail to amaze me with their creativity. Do you have a favorite DIYer?

Limited by my 9-5 business casual attire, my lazy weekends never leave the basics of t-shirts, oversized jumpers and denim. It's not uncommon that I find myself dumbfounded and staring at my closet in the dilemma of outfit choices. Pairing opposites seem to always do the trick. Just like here, wearing the girliest shorts with a boyish rolling stones t-shirt and long ankle-length cardigan. Think Romeo & Juliet, Beauty and the Beast, lace and studs, and fries with ice cream: all-time greatest examples of opposite attraction. DIY post to follow "short"-ly!

This summer is all about color blocking. Here's a few of my color combo obsessions lately. Though my closet is a stranger to vibrant, eye-catching hues, I cannot resist but to give this trend a try. It's fun how a simple tweak, like bright accessories, shoes, or nail polish, can completely change a look. And as a true Vancouverite, I just had to include that last photo to support my home team in the NHL Stanley Cup finals. Go Canucks Go!

midi to diy for

Here is the step-by-step post on how I made my own midi skirt, worn in my previous post. I know these are not the best instructions in the world but I tried my best to put it in the simplest words possible. So, hopefully they're somewhat comprehensible. This project is slightly more advanced as I didn't work with an actual pattern so some sewing background may be needed.

Materials: 2 meters of chiffon fabric (crepe/lace will do as well), 1.5 meters of elastic velvet ribbon, and a pack of 6mm elastic. [note: I'm 5'4" with a petite frame so use your discretion for the meters of fabric you'll need. It should be good enough if you could wrap the fabric around your waist 1.5 times].

If you do give this diy a try and come across any questions, just leave me a comment and I'll be more than happy to help. Oh, and sending me a photo of your masterpiece will totally make my day! Those who follow me on twitter may know that this is the DIY skirt I was working on 2 weeks ago. I had no luck finding my ideal midi skirt so I thought I'd make my own and here it is! My sewing was a bit rusty at first as it's been a while since I crafted a garment from scratch; but oh, have I forgotten how much I enjoy sewing. Two things I like about this skirt: the gathered ribbon-waistband and subtle dipped hem [which was probably the most difficult part of this project]. I will shortly post a how-to tutorial on this midi. Would love to read your comments about it because I have another similar DIY under construction.

I once read a study that found a positive relationship between the number of times one logs on to facebook per day and the traits of narcissism. Immediately, I can't help but to think of the correlation between blogging and narcissism. Blogs concentrate more on a specific interest as opposed to facebook, which functions more like an outlet of self-promotion; nonetheless, fashion blogs in particular are usually plastered with self-portraits and to some extent, bound to carry more narcissistic traits than any other type of blogs in my opinion. The study also shown that those who have lower self-esteem tend to spend more time on facebook. Similarly, blogging can sometimes work as an ego-booster for those who seek recognition and in a way, a popularity contest just like most social media actually. It would be interesting to see the results if the same study was conducted on fashion bloggers. Something I think about in my down time: do fashion bloggers attain more narcissistic qualities or/and lower self-esteem than others? Thoughts? If there was such thing as a low self-esteemed narcissist, I think I am one. haha :)

I can't seem to remember the last time I wore a maxi skirt but I think it was in grade 5 when I made my mom buy me one to wear to a friend's birthday party. My mom still brings up this story from time to time and it's one of those vivid childhood memories that will stay with me forever. Lately I've been obsessed with midi-maxi skirts and they're definitely a spring/summer staple. I don't know what triggered it but perhaps the girly girl has finally overthrown the androgynous side of me. This weekend I've been working on a relevant DIY project. Have been seeing many bluntly cropped tops lately while browsing through my usual favorite online stores. The unconventional length of a business casual button-down particularly struck to me. So I thought I'll make my own, with a slight twist. Just follow the 4 easy steps below to one of this spring's trends. I will do an outfit post in it soon :)

Materials: plain button-down shirt and assortment of buttons

1. Measure the length of your desire.
2. Pin and cut accordingly [I wanted the front to be shorter so I purposely left the back 2 inches longer].
3. Sew the hems.
4. Remove the original buttons and replace each of them with different hand-picked buttons.
5. And there, you have your own one of a kind cropped dress shirt!

I feel that the first photo should be the poster for the movie Orphan as I have mastered the demon-possessed, 'I want to hurt you' look and the fact that there's a "cross" aligned perfectly perpendicular above my head. haha. Rosanna and I found a great new location to shoot this week and we're so excited about it because there's so much more to explore there. Wearing almost everything new in this outfit. The faux leather shorts feel as soft as real leather and the jacket looks as chic as it keeps me cozy. I bought the satchel last time I visited Hong Kong and it is one of my greatest cheap finds :) Hope you all enjoyed this very much delayed outfit post and more to come as the weather is finally catching up with the season.

One of the chinese traditions I was brought up with was to always wear new shoes in the new year, which was symbolic to stepping into a good year. Given that it's only March and I've already gained 5 new additions to my collection, I could only hope that it will put me 5 steps ahead of the game. Showing 3/5 I bought and the Jeffrey Campbell's X-ON wedges are my new favorites. They give me the height yet surprisingly beyond comfortable to walk in :) And yes, those are cherry blossoms in the background...I can't wait until spring officially lands in Vancouver. Hope you are all just as excited as I am!

These pictures basically sum up the weather in Vancouver for the past two weeks: gloomy and wet. As mentioned in my previous post, new year, new start, which also means new changes and new ideas. Though it's only the 13th day of the year thusfar, I'm already caught in dilemmas of having to make point-turning decisions, both in and outside of fashforward. It's time for change when someone asks you how your year was and you can't think of anything exciting to share or when your lifestyle has remained status quo for the past two years. So, for this New Year's resolution, I want to embrace change. Given the extreme indecisive personality I have, changing and leaving my comfort zone really isn't an easy thing for me. Starting fashforward, nonetheless, was probably one of the easiest decisions I've made this year though I debated for awhile too. What is your New Years resolution?

Merry Christmas everyone! My holiday mood is very much delayed this year so the fact that today is actually Christmas seems kind of surreal to me. I, nonetheless, am so grateful for all the food I'll be devouring, dents I'll be making to my wallet on Boxing Day, and days I'll be off doing nothing but hibernating and junk-fooding. Now that is my ideal Christmas. These studio pictures were taken when I "modeled" for my friend Sherry's photography assignment. And nothing shows more holiday spirit than red :) Sending my love to each and one of you this season. XOXO ;)

For those who are thinking of giving back this holiday, how about help build a nursery school for the kids in Mwanza, Tanzania? My dear friend [Hi Jacquie *hand waving*] has been volunteering for the Project Tujifunze, a grassroots organization working with the Afretech Aid Society, in hopes to raise enough money for a school by August 2011. There are currently no schools within that area so building one will make a huge difference for these children. Please help bring literacy to the young lives in Mwanza by making a donation here. The Great Wall, heart-shaped egg tarts, Forbidden City, traditional Chinese porcelain china dress, green tea latte with bunny, here and there.

Jet lag and flu do not mix so I must apologize for the lack of posts this month. Aside from being fascinated by the infamous Great Wall and Forbidden City, everywhere I look was a scenic eye candy in Beijing. Time spent at the Great Wall just admiring and mesmerized by the art of architecture was definitely the highlight of my trip. And I think not a lot of people can tell you they slid down the Great Wall but I can :) I became a kid when I found out that one of the options of transporting down was to toboggan on a giant slide. That was the best RMB $45 I have ever spent, which comes to about $6.50 CDN. All in all, this trip really allowed me to get in touch with the Chinese cultural nerd in me, which is impossible to find in the glamorous city of Hong Kong, and not to mention the unforgettable meals of Peking ducks and the perfect company I had to share this experience with. It was definitely one great trip!

These pictures were taken right before I left Vancouver and I am so glad to have escaped from the unusual -6 degrees there. Today is my last day in Beijing but will have another week in Hong Kong before returning home. Though my stay in Beijing was short, it has also been incredibly amazing. Can't wait to share with you all :)

Arrived Asia for a few days now and I must say my trip already first kicked off with a pleasant surprise at the airport. My high school sweetheart, who now happens to be one of my bestests, flew in from Taiwan for the weekend to surprise me. They don't call them high school sweethearts for nothing because they truly are the sweetest :) It's funny how you never grow apart from certain people in your life no matter how many thousands and thousands of miles you are away from them. And this particularly applies to how I feel at this very moment as I sit here typing this post in Beijing with my two BFFs...because I know with us, some things will never change [and that's in the best way possible].

Dates are set and tickets are booked! Finally taking my long anticipated vacation end of this month and traveling to Hong Kong and Beijing. Though it's only for the mere 2.5 weeks, it is already the longest I've been away from work and words cannot describe just how excited I am to get away! Can't believe that December is approaching and Christmas decorations are all around. Rumor has it that Vancouver will be having one of the coldest winters this year and I think the city has already gotten a taste of it in the past few days. I guess it's almost time to bring out my snow gear :( What are your plans this holiday?

For all my life, I have never been an animal print supporter; then again, never say never. There's a first time for everything and this leopard print top has made it to my list of exceptions. It's tricky wearing leopard without looking like Peg Bundy and that's to not overdo it. Personally, I go by the rule of not wearing more than two print pieces and of course, avoid mixing animal prints. Been quite satisfied with my online purchases this month: draped collar wool jacket and shearling boots, which both I'll be living in this winter. Halloween is approaching and no different from any other year, costume picking always sucks out all my brain juice. What are you being this Halloween?

I thought it was funny when I showed my mom this DIY top, she said it reminded her of Elvis. Then I took a second look at it and thought to myself "heh, she's right." haha. Studding is probably one of the easiest forms of DIYs and not to mention the endless possibilities our creativity could bring us. When I first saw this blouse, I knew that it would be the perfect 'stud it yourself' project. I always feel that studs automatically put the cool factor to any garment. There's really nothing fancy needed here, just a plain top, vast amount of studs, and a sprinkle of imagination :) Vision the pattern before starting because there's no room for mistakes [the teeth of the studs will leave holes]! Read my previous DIY post for more ideas.

tip: Studs could get really heavy, especially with the 200+ I've used, so make sure to pick a thicker fabric to avoid it from scrunching.

October weather in Vancouver has been surprisingly and unusually nice to us this year, allowing me to wear these shoes I bought last month a few more times before it gets too cold. I often find myself caught in seasonal footwear dilemmas: inappropriately wanting to wear knee-high boots on warm sunny days and sandals in the freezing winter. I guess we always want what we can't have :) Currently working on some big changes for my blog and I can't wait to show the brand new fashforward once it's done! In the meantime, stay tuned for my next post [hint: DIY and a load of studs].

I was talking to an old friend last week and we reached a consensus that it takes a lot more for us to be entertained, amused, and just generally happy as we get older. I guess it's because when we were young and inexperienced with no stress and worries to weigh us down, we had the luxury of hyping over things that may seem now as 'no big deal.' In exchange [ironically], I have also grown to be more attentive to the little details in life that I probably have neglected and overlooked when I was young. Thus, I made a list. A list of stuff that never fails to put a smile on my face and just simply makes me that much happier and more appreciative. What's on your list?

1. songs I can relate to
2. seeing elderly couples hold hands
3. laughing to the point that I cry
4. catching up with an old friend and realizing that nothing has changed [in the best way possible]
5. Safeway custard-filled cakes and Big City Cupcakes
6. epiphanies [and I like the sound of the word]
7. the anticipation and countdown to a vacation
8. the comforting symbolism behind a Starbucks vanilla latte

Aritzia at Pacific Centre

Aritzia had their fall/winter '10 Talula Babaton Trunk Show on Monday and it was exciting to finally try on some of the pieces I saw at the fashion show earlier last month. There were a lot more guests this time around than the spring/summer trunk show, which made it a bit difficult to find anything left in my size. Nonetheless, can't complain about a fun exclusive shopping experience surrounded by beautiful clothes, a stylish crowd, and the companion of cheese and wine. I finally bought the Wilfred gathered carrot pants that I drooled over at the fashion show [but in black] and will do an outfit post in them soon. The Talula dagger heart sweater in the last photo is even cuter in person but too bad angora makes my skin itchy or else I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

Bought this Chanel silk blouse awhile back at Nordstrom Rack for almost 90% off - best buy ever! - and this was only my second time wearing it [its like the godfather of my closet. haha]. The make of the buttons alone is a work of art and not to mention the delicacy of the fabric makes me feel ultra girly to be in. Love love love the new black jewel ring I bought in Venice Beach. Every time I look at it, I feel that it's telling me a story behind it. It rained over the weekend in Vancouver and feels that summer has cut short on us this year. Got a handful of mosquito bites while I was out for these pictures and now one of them has swollen up to the size of a tennis ball :( [and sadly, I'm not exaggerating]. I'm impatiently anticipating for my hair to grow long enough for fishtail braids; lately, out of desperation as you can see, I have been trying to integrate braids in all ways possible...grow faster please :)

Back from my shopping-packed weekend trip in LA and I miss it already. Didn't get to spend as much time as I wanted at the Getty and the weather wasn't in its best behavior that day; nonetheless, was happy enough to just be there. It's one of my favourite places on earth and also what I imagined heaven would be like.....seriously :) These are just a few random shots I took throughout the trip and I promise to do a proper fashion post this week.

This was the outfit I wore to the Aritzia fashion show last week. Saw many variations of this bustier tank on the runway and the best part about it is that it comes in an assorted colours and styles. I was looking for an exaggeratedly oversized blazer so I purposely bought this one two sizes up and now it makes me wonder what took shoulder pads so long to make a comeback. Just finished packing for LA and now heading to the airport. Can't wait to share my trip when I get back! Have a lovely week :) xx.

I know I've worn this t-shirt before but its versatility just amazes me. I tend to drive away from graphics but this top is definitely an exception that goes straight to my list of summer favourites. This skirt is slightly out of my character as I haven't owned anything this bright with such a wide spectrum of colours for as long as I can remember; yet, I like the fact that it reminds me of retro-looking curtain patterns. July has been pretty sweet to me thus far :) First, the weather heats up in Vancouver and I must say, I'm a much happier person under the sun - I think I might be mildly diagnosed with SAD. Then, fashforward was featured in Couture Magazine, which I am still ecstatic about!

So, these are the American Apparel pants I posted about earlier and I must say, they are the most comfortable pair of pants I've ever owned. However, they do wrinkle really easily [even simply just by bending down]; otherwise, they are pretty perfect for summer :) It should be hitting up to 27 degrees this coming week in Vancouver and I just can't wait! I used my mini red Chanel for the first time in awhile merely because it sustains nothing more than just my iphone. Even after 20 years, this purse still makes a perfect accent piece to any outfit. Chanel is truly the definition of class and classic.

Wearing my favorite blazer; love that it's double breasted with two large side pockets and not to mention that it's black! Just something simple and easy I threw on, though I must say I was quite cold by the end of the shoot. Rosanna and I were feeling adventurous that night so we decided to take some night shots for a change as we are still in the exploration stage with our cameras [and this whole photography and blogging thing]. We excitedly hunted for a good location at 12:30am in hopes to experiment with the cool effects of night light only to realize that I had forgotten the plate for my tripod [yet another many stupid moments of mine lately]. Hence, the blurry quality of the pictures; nonetheless, no thanks to the tripod, still a very neat turnout of the photos given the inevitable hand-shakiness and limited lighting we had to work with.

At last, I have found the perfect pleated trousers! I've been on a search for a pair of carrot/paper bag pants for a while but they always seem to fit more like a garbage bag on me. As I was on the verge of giving up, I stumbled upon a pair at AA the other day that fits me well from the waist to hips to length. I find myself shopping for a lot of tan/beige pieces lately. Maybe it's my mission impossible to naturally get a tan [trust me, I've tried...even spending a week on a beach in Sabah didn't work] that have seemingly and subconsciously led me to develop such a craze for this particular shade...? Just a thought.

Shorts are finally an option now that it actually feels like spring, though the weather is still not quite summer-ready yet (but neither are my legs). Found this vintage belt while going through my mom's treasures and I must say I was surprised by two things: 1) my mother had an unimaginably small waist even after giving birth to two 2) certain styles can really stand the erosion of time; even up until now, this belt goes with practically any outfit. And I must say I like it even more that my initials are on it :)

p.s: Though it might be slightly difficult to tell whether I am laughing or crying in the last picture, it's the former...just so you know.

stud it yourself

1) Materials: 0.8 to 1.2 meter of black velvet ribbon, assorted gold square studs, and 1 pair of small snap buttons

2) Measure the length of ribbon you need to fit around your head, leaving approximately an extra 3-4 inches on each end. Pin the area where you want the large studs to be placed on the headband prior to securing the studs on. Then, secure the small studs by equally spacing them from one another. This is where creativity takes part in the project. Play around with the variations; pattern it however you like!

Tip: Make sure the backing of the studs are firmly pressed down flat to avoid them from catching onto your hair.

3) Try the headband on and mark the midpoint on where the two ends meet at the back (one overlapping another). Sew on the snaps accordingly.

4) After the snaps are sewn, hide the stitching with a large stud and trim the two ends so that they are in matching length.

5) Ta~Da :) Easy.

You always have options: Instead of using snaps, you can try just tying a bow at the back (approximately 1.5-1.6 meter of ribbon will be needed). For something more dramatic, loosely braid two to three headbands together.

I bought this dress at the Talula Babaton trunk show hosted by Aritzia back in March. I love the washed-out faded finish of the dress and not to mention the low scoop back. The shoulders are slightly padded with minor stitching details, which made me just that much more in love with it [because it's always the little things that count in life]. Doesn't seem like spring has landed in Vancouver yet and the rainy sun-deprived weather is making it impossible to take pictures outside. Let's just skip spring this year and bring out summer.

Currently, really like the mixture of stripes and floral; something I quickly put together as I rushed off to photography class. Models came in for a practice photoshoot that day and after class, I [of course] took advantage of the set and lighting. We fooled around with our cameras and my friend, Rosanna took these pictures. She said something stupidly funny to make me laugh and managed to capture a few excellent candid shots of my akwardly postitioned legs. Will be having a date with canon tomorrow so more portraiture to come :)

Welcome to my first official fashion post :) I recently purchased a few Alex Wang items on shopbop and the black cami mini-dress I'm wearing is one of them. I am whole-heartedly devoted to dark colors; black, gray, and white are the primary colors of my closet. I like things plain and simple. You'll often see me dressed in solid colors accessorized with interesting jeweleries (even better when they're vintage!) and accented with some designer pieces.
